The Edu Corps program is a collaboration between the Center for Community Engagement and Federal Work Study. Edu Corps members provide homework, literacy, and mentoring activities and support to elementary-age school children.  A majority of these activities will be supporting elementary school-age children and participating in teacher-directed activities. The Edu Corps will participate in directed activities, computer literacy programs, homework assistance, and general duties as required. Various sites throughout the Oxnard, Camarillo, Ventura, and Somis areas are available.

Applicants must be:

  • a current 91ÊÓƵ undergraduate student
  • Federal Work Study eligible
  • commit to working 10-15 hours per week in the fall and spring semesters
  • available afternoon or early evening for some locations
  • make a one-year commitment
  • have reliable transportation to the site
  • Pay rate: $20.00 an hour

    Jasmine Gomez

    Jasmine Gomez is a junior in the Liberal Studies Program and plans to graduate in 2026. Jasmine chose 91ÊÓƵ for its small class sizes and ideal student-to-professor ratio, which supports her learning style. After graduation, she plans to enter 91ÊÓƵ's Teaching Credential Program to earn her multiple subject credential and begin a career as a local teacher. Currently, she works at , where she provides academic support to elementary school students. This position allows her to learn from both teachers and students and to become more connected with the community she joined two years ago. It also aligns with her academic goal of becoming an inclusive educator. Once Jasmine graduates she is looking forward to teaching across all grade levels and hopes to one day coach a school basketball team.

    Josselyn Rodriguez

    Josselyn Rodriguez is a senior majoring in Studio Art. Josselyn plans to graduate in Spring 2025 and will seek a full-time job in marketing and graphic design, ideally one that allows her to travel. Currently, she assists teachers at , supporting classroom activities to enhance student learning. As an Art major, she’s constantly seeking fresh inspiration, and being around a new generation of young, creative minds intrigues her because their imagination is endless. She is hoping to learn from this new generation, and maybe connect with a new perspective of learners, as well as share and be a helpful aid to these learners. She believes that connecting with people of all ages fosters personal growth, opens up new possibilities, and offers the chance to make meaningful connections

    Maricarmen Guillen

    Maricarmen is a sophomore, majoring in Business with plans to graduate in Spring 2027. After gaining a few years of experience post-graduation, she plans to attend law school to pursue a career in Intellectual Property Law. She currently works with young students from farm-working families, at housing community, assisting them with assignments to help them view education positively. This role allows her to give back to the community, and she sees it as a valuable learning experience that complements her business studies. One of Maricarmen’s role models, is Dr. Cynthia Sherman, Associate Professor, Business, because she supports small entrepreneurs in turning ideas into businesses—an endeavor she hopes to pursue one day. Maricarmen is dedicated to community involvement and building connections, which she believes is essential to fostering a supportive network. As a Mexican-American who loves to draw, she values 91ÊÓƵ's close-knit environment for creating meaningful relationships.

    Marcos Farias

    Marcos Farias is a junior, majoring in Psychology. He is currently serving at CEDC’s , where he has been providing one-on-one support to K-8 children, helping them understand and master challenging homework concepts. He was interested in this position because he wanted to encourage and support children in their academic goals and interests. Marcos believes there are many benefits to being involved in the community, such as developing a sense of belonging and empathy. After graduation, Marcos plans to earn a Masters of Social Work.

    Maria Tellez Mendoza

    Maria Tellez Mendoza is a sophomore, majoring in Liberal Studies. She was attracted to this position because she enjoys working with kids. After graduation, she plans to earn a teaching credential and eventually lead a third-grade class. Maria also comes to this position with experience interning at two different schools and was involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County. She believes it’s important to be involved in the community and build a welcoming environment for future generations. Maria will be serving at .

    Jacqueline Manriquez

    Jacqueline Manriquez is a sophomore, majoring in Health Science and minoring in Spanish. She was attracted to this position because it allowed working with children. After graduation, Jacqueline would like to attend grad school and pursue a career in the health field working with children. She will be providing academic homework support at .
